What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services across India. Introduced on July 1, 2017, GST replaced multiple indirect taxes like VAT, service tax, excise duty, and others, creating a unified national market. GST is a destination-based, multi-stage tax that is applied at each stage of the supply chain with credit available for taxes paid at earlier stages.

GST Tax Slabs

In India, GST is levied at five main rates: 0% (essential items like fresh food, healthcare), 3% (gold and precious metals), 5% (household necessities, transport services), 12% (processed food, business class air travel), 18% (most goods and services, IT services, financial services), and 28% (luxury items, automobiles, aerated drinks). Some goods also attract a compensation cess over and above the 28% slab.

How GST is Calculated

Our calculator supports two types of GST calculations. In GST-exclusive calculation, you enter the base price before tax, and the calculator adds the GST amount to give you the total price. In GST-inclusive calculation, you enter the final price including tax, and the calculator extracts the GST component to show you the original price before tax. The formulas used are: GST Amount = (Price ร— GST Rate) / 100 for exclusive, and Original Price = Total Price ร— 100 / (100 + GST Rate) for inclusive calculations.

Components of GST

Under the GST framework, there are three types of tax components. CGST (Central GST) is collected by the central government for intra-state transactions. SGST (State GST) is collected by the state government for intra-state transactions. IGST (Integrated GST) is collected by the central government for inter-state transactions. For intra-state sales, CGST and SGST are each charged at half the total GST rate. Our calculator automatically splits the GST into CGST and SGST components for your convenience.

Why Use a GST Calculator?

A GST calculator is essential for businesses, freelancers, and consumers to quickly determine the tax component of any transaction. It helps businesses price their products correctly, prepare invoices with accurate tax breakdowns, and plan their input tax credit claims. Consumers can use it to verify the GST charged on their purchases. Our calculator is fast, accurate, and supports all GST slab rates used in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

India has five main GST rates: 0% for essential items, 3% for gold and precious metals, 5% for household necessities, 12% for processed food and some services, 18% for most goods and services, and 28% for luxury items and automobiles. Some items also attract a compensation cess above 28%.

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are charged on intra-state transactions, each at half the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) is charged on inter-state transactions at the full GST rate. For example, on an 18% GST product sold within a state, 9% CGST and 9% SGST are charged.

If you have the base price before GST, add GST using: Total = Base Price + (Base Price ร— GST Rate / 100). If you have the GST-inclusive price and want to find the base price, use: Base Price = Inclusive Price ร— 100 / (100 + GST Rate). Our calculator handles both scenarios.

Most products and services are covered under GST. However, some items are exempt, including fresh vegetables, fruits, milk, unprocessed food grains, healthcare services, and educational services. Petroleum products, alcohol for human consumption, and electricity are currently outside the GST framework.
